People can vote for the OntonagonCounty Animal Protection (OCAP) at www.theanimalrescuesite.com. The Shelter that received the most votes can receive up to s $20,000 Grant. Vote daily.
Don’t forget to drop off your Michigan returnable can’s and bottles to the OCAP dumpster (located between The Ontonagon Herald office and Peninsula Graphics on River Street in Ontonagon) money raised goes to help build an animal shelter in Ontonagon County.
At this time Copper Country Mental Health Services is unable to accept any cardboard or paper for recycling drop offs until further notice.
The Rockland American Legion Auxiliary post 92 is sponsoring a coupon program for our Military families. The overseas commissaries will honor manufacturers coupons for up to 6 months after their expiration date. Please bring your unused or expired coupons and place them in boxes located at Pat’s Foods, U-Save and Pamida in Ontonagon. The Rockland Auxiliary will clip, sort and mail to the participating commissaries overseas. If you would like to help with a monetary donation to help with shipping costs, donations can be made to the Rockland Auxiliary, P. O. Box 1, Rockland, MI49960. The new exhibit in the Community Arts Centers' Kerredge Gallery is Recent Works by local artists, Tom Rudd and Margo McCafferty. Their collaborative work, color reduction relief prints, combines their talents for drawing, painting and carving. The exhibit will run through July 3. Recent Works by Tom Rudd and Margo McCafferty is supported by a grant from the Michigan Council for Arts and Cultural Affairs with funding from the National Endowment for the Arts. The MarquetteGeneralCancerCenter will be hosting a “Living with Cancer” support group on June 11th, June 25th, July 23rd and August 20th. The group meets from 4:30 – 6 p.m. in the Lombardi Room at MarquetteGeneralHospital, which is located on the ground floor near the cafeteria. As the Relay for life season kicks into high gear, volunteers are leading 336 Relay for Life events across Michigan and Indiana toward a combined fundraising goal of more than $27.5 million this year. The Ontonagon Valley Sportsmen’s Club will offer a women’s basic shotgun course on Sunday, June 14th at the SuckerCreekRange. The course is for beginners and other interested shooters from 1 to 2:30 pm. Open shotgun and archery shooting will follow starting at 2:30m. There is no charge to participants. The Ontonagon County Economic Development Corporation is sponsoring business development client meetings in conjunction with the Michigan Small Business and TechnologyDevelopmentCenter. The meetings will be held on Tuesday, June 9th at the EDC office in the Ontonagon County Courthouse. These confidential meetings are offered free of charge by the EDC. The All Lake Garage Sale on LakeGogebic will be Saturday, June 13th, from 8:00 to 2:00 C.T. The OttawaNational Forest invites you to attend its upcoming presentation on invasive species on Tuesday, June 9th starting at 8:30 am central time at the OttawaVisitorCenter in Watersmeet, Michigan. The presentation will consist of a slide show and live samples of invasive plants that are harming natural areas in the Northwoods. After the presentation everyone is invited to come on a field tour of some invasive plant infestations in GogebicCounty. You will need to arrange for your own transportation for the field tour. Conga Se Menne, an eclectic mix of Blues, Funk, Latin, Reggae, Rock and Caribbean beats with a Finnish accent, will be a the Ontonagon Theater of Performing Arts on Friday, June 12th at 7:00 pm. Tickets are $10 in advance, $12 at the door, $3 for students (K-12) at the door only. In celebration of free fishing weekend, the OttawaNational Forest is hosting an exciting, fun-filled day of fishing for kids and their families. Community youngsters are invited to come out to the HenryLake campground with their fishing poles, tackle boxes and bait and take part in the OttawaNational Forest’s Kids Free Fishing Derby from 8:00 a.m. to noon on Saturday, June 13th. Every child fishing at the derby will receive a prize for participation. In addition to fishing, the day will also feature prize drawings and a casting contest. Youngsters are encouraged to register at the lake when they arrive. All fishing will be done from shore or off of the fishing pier at the campground and all children must be accompanied by a parent or guardian.
Shelden Avenue in Houghton will be the place to be on! The CopperCountryCommunityArtsCenter and the City of Houghton present the 8th annual Houghton Spring Art and Music Festival on Saturday, June 13th. The festival runs from noon-8pm and features artist booths and demos, free kids art activities, food, and an incredible music line up. Headliner this year is PJ Olsson who will be working with local young musicians for the festival’s grand finale performance. If you’re an artist or involved in a community group and would like to participate in the Houghton Spring Art and Music Festival, booth spaces are still available. The senior health screening includes the following health assessments: Blood Pressure, Lifestyle questionnaire, Cholesterol/HDL Levels, Glucose and Hemoglobin, Height and Weight, Pulse and Respiration, Temperature, Urinalysis, Hemoccult test for detection of Colon Cancer, Bone Density, Education on self exams, nutrition and exercise. The Ahmeek Fire Department & Allouez (Al-a-way) Township Fire Department invite all to the 56th Annual Copper Country Fire Fighters Tournament to be held on Saturday, June 27th in AhmeekVillage. Races start at noon in the park, parade line up at 6:00pm in New Allouez (Al-a-Way) parade will start at 7:0 pm, come down U.S. 41 and ending in Ahmeek village by the park. Dance will be held at the (old) calumet armory starting at 8:00 pm

Greenland is having a community Picnic, which includes bringing a dish to pass, your own meats and beverages starting at 4:00 pm, Street Dance and Fireworks all on the Friday, July 3rd. The White Pine American Legion & The White Pine 4th of July Committee would like to invite everyone to the Independence Day Celebration in White Pine on Saturday, July 4th. The parade starts at the White Pine Rec Center with registration from 10 to 11 and the parade starting at 11. At the White Pine American Legion, there will be kids games from 11:30 to 1:30, Bingo form 1 to 3and Food from Noon to 3. Continuing at the Konteka with food from 5 to 8 and family fun night with fireworks at Dusk and entertainment following the fireworks.

In Celebration of the 25th Anniversary of the Vietnam Veterans’ Moving Wall, the Wall will be in White Pine at the American Legion Post, Thursday, July 16ththrough Sunday, July 19th.
