Q: Who owns Y-101 now?
A: On July 1, 2025, SNRN Broadcasting filed an application with the FCC for the assignment of the WUPY-FM broadcast license to Michigan Civic Media Alliance LLC. Civic Media is a Wisconsin-based media company dedicated to providing quality hometown radio and digital content. The purchase was completed through the Michigan Civic Media Alliance, which is led by Civic Media with support from the Michigan Independent Media Group.
Q: What is Y-101’s history?
A: Y-101 was granted a construction permit for its original tower by the Federal Communications Commission on December 12, 1982. The station has been serving the Ontonagon area and western Upper Peninsula for over 40 years, providing country music and vital community information to residents and visitors alike.
Q: What kind of music do you play?
A: We play Superior Country! Our format includes country music artists from the 90s to today’s hottest country stars. If it’s country, you’ll hear it on Y-101!

A: We feature several popular shows including The 906 Show and the legendary Deer Hunters Round-Up during the local deer hunting season. We also broadcast church services on Sunday mornings from 7:00am to 10:00am EST, providing spiritual programming for our community.

A: WUPY broadcasts at 100,000 watts effective radiated power with an effective coverage radius of 105 kilometres (65 miles) under typical atmospheric conditions. Our signal can typically be received as far south as Eagle River, Wisconsin, as far west as Ironwood, Michigan, and as far east as Three Lakes, Michigan. Our transmitter tower is located outside of Rockland, Michigan.
